Drug and Alcohol Abuse Council

The Council is composed of key state cabinet department secretaries, judges, legislators, addiction specialists and knowledgeable citizens. Major responsibilities of the Council include: identification and recommendations regarding system improvements in coordination with crime prevention and health programs; preparation and annual update of a two year strategic plan that identifies priorities for the delivery and funding of services to the state; ; identifying promising practices, programs and emerging needs in substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment; supporting the work of  the local drug and alcohol abuse councils;  conducting annual surveys of federal and state funds used in Maryland for substance abuse prevention, intervention and treatment services for the purpose of identifying gaps, duplication, and opportunities for improved coordination and collaboration; and facilitating improved linkages between the criminal justice system and existing drug and alcohol abuse services.
