The Internal Auditor performs an independent appraisal function established by the Internal Audit Charter SOP CP.CAD.04.001 within Charles County Government to examine and evaluate its activities as a service to the County Government. The objective of the Internal Auditor is to assist the Board of County Commissioners, County Administrator, and the County staff in the effective discharge of their responsibilities. To this end, internal auditing furnishes analysis, appraisals, recommendations, counsel, and information concerning the activities reviewed. The audit objective includes promoting effective control at a reasonable cost.

The scope of internal auditing should encompass the examination and evaluation of the adequacy and effectiveness of Charles County's system of internal control and the quality of performance in carrying out assigned responsibilities.

The Internal Audit Office (IAO) reviews all reports received and investigates or refers to appropriate agencies all credible allegations of fraud, waste, or abuse regarding Charles County Government resources (funds, property, one’s position, etc.).
